Sochi 2013...365 days till the Games
Exactly one year till the start of the next Winter Olympic Game, and that means this is the time to check out Olympic venue and trails.
We took a charter flight (Balkan Holidays) from Zurich to Sochi, and that flight was "overbooked". There was barely room to seat all the passengers, and most of our carry-on bags we had to hold in our hands for 3.5hr flight.
We were staying at the "Krasnaya Polyana", Park Inn hotel, which is about 1hr bus ride from Sochi airport. The place didn't look like typical Russia, brand new, "german-looking" hotels with very nice and helpful staff. Construction site around it, was insane...thousands and thousands of workers, building from the scratch - roads, hotels, bridges, train stations and many more objects...I really hope they can finish all that in time.
Now it's a time to go up the mountain and check out Olympic ski trails. 20min gondola ride, followed by cool looking snow-mobile (Sherpa) shuttle and we are at the site. As we expected, all the trails was designed for russians and russians skiers only. Sprint lap- is the longest and hardest course I've ever seen, I should say that all the "real" sprinters wasn't happy about that. Skate part (of the Duathlon and 50km) has pretty much "Alp de Chermis" climb build in it. I don't mind that, but you got to be in the best shape of your life to ski it fast, which I didn't have this time, but still end up on :) respectful 17th place in "pre-olympic 30km Duathlon race that weekend.
Saying all that I think most of the athletes, staff and coaches was pretty satisfied with what we saw and experienced during that test event, and we all very exited to see how it all will look like in a year, like I said earlier there is a lot to be build and fix.
I'm super exited and already getting shivers when I think about racing there next year.
Next stop 15km skate in Davos SUI and World Championship
Stay tuned for more....
